Sajid teams up with Sajid -- One is an acclaimed filmmaker, while the other, an acclaimed commedian-cum-host and together, they are out to tickle our funny bones. We are talking about filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala and popular TV host Sajid Khan. Being best friends, both of the are now coming together to make a film. And no prizes for guessing what the film will be all about. Comedy, what else. 

Filmmaker David Dhawan, known for his comedies, has already started working on his next film titled 'Partner'. And though the film boasts of an impressive star cast -- Salman Khan, Govinda, Katrina Kaif and Lara Dutta, the one person that David is most glad about getting back on board is actor Vindu Dara Singh, whom the filmmaker considers to be his lucky charm these days.

Rajkumar Santoshi will launch hisjoint venture with Sami Siddiqui on April 9. The film stars Ajay Devgan, Aishwarya Rai, Akshay Kumar, Tusshar Kapoor, Fardeen Khan and Nana Patekar.

Percept Profile has registered the title Shivaji, but the film will not be directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. His film on the Maratha King with Smitha Thackeray has been shelved.

Malaysians are crazy about Shahrukh Khan. The country doesn't allow film shoots on its airport, especially at nights. Samar Khan's Kuch Meeta Ho Jaaye, which features SRK in a cameo, is the only exception to the rule.

Manisha Koirala and music composer Sandeep Chowta have become great pals. The composer-turned-director is so impressed with Koirala, that he has decided to compose the background score of Manisha’s home production for less money. Chowta and Koirala even go partying these days. They are not seeing each other or anything but are just friends. Chowta will be directing friend Nagarjuna and Tabu in his film for iDream Production.

Amitabh Bachchan is like an over enthusiastic newcomer on the sets. Even at 60 you can find the superstar of the millennium humming songs either from his films or some old films. Just the other day on the sets of Khakee, when Ajay Devgan was celebrating his best actor award by cutting a cake, Bachchan came out of his van to be part of the celebrating and even cheered Devgan.

Rabir Kapoor is in no hurry to face the camera. He wants to learn the technical side of filmmaking before giving his first shot in front of the camera. The charming son of Rishi Kapoor has joined Sanjay Leela Bhansali as an assistant and will be helping him in his next two films, namely, Black and Bajirao Mastani. This does not mean that Ranbir is not interested in acting but the young Kapoor feels there is still some time before he makes his debut as an actor.

Leena Chandravarkar is making a comeback to films. The reason is definitely monetary. The former actress, who quit industry after her marriage, is now meeting up producers for a role. She even met up with Rajkymar Santoshi for his Abhishek Bachchan starrer and showed keen interest to be a part of the project. She has even approached Indra Kumar, brother of her close friend Aruna Irani, for a role in Khujli. Let’s see if her comeback makes any impact.

Katrina Kaif finally made her first public appearance with the Khan family at the launch party of Jo Bole Sonihal. This is surprising because till date she has claimed that she doesn’t know Salman, though the actor, in one of his interviews, said that he is friends with Katrina and that Bhansali wanted to cast her in Bajirao Mastani. One really wonders why she has to hide her friendshio when sallu has no problem with it.

Manisha Koirala has opted out of Pritish Nandy Communications Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. Although the director of the film has not been finalized. Nandy has spoken to star like Salman and Kreena Kapoor who have shown interest in being cast in the film. In all likelihood Madhuri will essay Meena Kumari role in the film. Nandy intends to dub the film in Bengali also. Manisha and Salman Khan have previously worked together in Khamoshi but apparently the two didn’t share very good vibes.

Is all not okay between Vivek and father Suresh Oberoi? It does look like the father who is supposed to be the spokesperson for Vivek doesn’t know half the thing his son is doing these days. Although Oberoi Sr denied that Vivek has any plans of turning producer, one has learnt that the actor approached Rajkumar Santoshi to direct a film. Apparently Vivek is still keen on acting in The Invaders while the father has given away the dates to Indra Kumar for his film Khujli.

Much is bring written about how the story of Salman Khan’s next release Tere Naam is similar to that of his real life love story. But Sanjay Kapoor, the original choice for the role, denies this. One joke doing the rounds of the industry is that since Salman Khan’s hairstyles in the film is much like that of Abdul Kalam President of India, Tere Naam could well vie for a tax-free certificate.

It is now going to be Dimple Kapadia vs Manisha Koirala. Both the actresses are playing the same character in two different films based on the same subject. Both are thrillers and inspired by Nicole Kidman’s the other. Dimple’s film is being directed by K.Ravishankar and Manisha’s film is being directed by newcomer Harry Fernandes. Manisha apparently has finished shooting for the talkie portion of the film in one and a half months, only the songs remain to be shot.

Ayesha Takia is the next new thing to hit Bollywood, she might have lost an opportunity to work with Shah Rukh Khan in Main Hoon Naa, but we learn that this Abhi Nahin Abhi Karo Intezaar girl (she did the remix album of this song) has already signed Abbas-Mastan’s next film being producer by Gorwardhan Thanwani. Also, Ayesha has often been spotted with Manisha Koirala’s brother Siddharth.

Strange are our film industry wallahs. While poor Salman is busy drowning himself in grief, his producers are busy cashing in on him. The Tere Naam guys have started promotion the film as if it is Salman Khan’s autobiography. Wonder how much of it is going to be true. Agreed that Salman did shave off his head to be with his lady love Aishwarya, which eventually didin’t happen, but he landed himself in the role of Sethu in Tere Naam. But one does not really think it is the right way to promote a film. And God forbid, let’s hope he does not land up in an asylum like he does in the movie!

Call it coincidence or whatever, like his father, Abhishek Bachchan has finally found appreciation from critics, and public in general, for his performance in Sooraj Barjatya’s Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon. It may be recalled here that Amitabh Bachchan too found acceptance as an actor from Zanjeer. Unlike his father, Abhishek Bachchan has a long way to go before he’s accepted as a star. He has about seven releases this year. Let’s see if that happens this year!

Barbara Bradford’s case against Karishma has scared a lot of aour Hindi filmmakers. There were planning to make a copy of Bruce Almighty with some big stars. But after they saw what happened to Sahara guys no one wants to take the risk again. Besides, even the Hollywood films are now reseasing in India a couple of weeks after they are screened in the US, which has become all the more scary now! But a director like Guddu Dhanoa should be sued for ruining a script like Entity, which was a scary movie… here too he has turned it in to a comic film.

Will Amitabh Bachchan be a part of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Move 5? When Chopra conceived the movie he wanted Bachchan Sr to be a part of it, but now since the latter has committed to so many movies that it doesn’t seem he will find time for Chopra. The film will be co-produced by Outlaw Productions which made films like Training Day and Sex, Lies and Videotape. The casting of the film hasn’t been finalized as yet… only once the list is out shall we know if Mr. Bachchan is taking the role. Chopra hasn’t really got the chance of working with SRK and Bachchan although he always starts off his projects taking these two actors into consideration.

The wizard of historical films (remember ‘Pukar’, ‘Sikandar-e-Azam’, ‘Prithvi Vallabh, ?) Was, frankly speaking, shattered after the disastrous failure of his magnum opus ‘Jhansi Ki Rani,. Nevertheless, he did not lose heart and went on to plan yet another historical, this one on the life and times of Ashoka the Great.

After finalising the script, he arranged a meeting with all his financial friends to discuss the project. Just as he finished briefing them about it, one of the guys asked: “Modi Sahab, who will play the little role of Ashoka?

He was stunned. Because nobody had ever before questioned him about the casting in his films. They would only ask whether or not he would be directing the movie and, the moment he nodded his head, they would give him the money.

The shock question made him realise that these people had lost faith in him as a film-maker. That was why they wanted to know who would be playing the pivotal role. The realization that his reputation as a film-maker was being questioned shook him up.

In his own words, “I was terribly upset and immediately scrapped the project. After this, I pledged, I will never make a movie again.” And he never did!

 Doodh Me Dhule Hue Mukesh

Mukesh……A Soulful singer.

Mukesh Chand, as Raj Kapoor always affectionately called him was a 'Dilli ka Kayasth'. Raj Kapoor came up with the one-liner 'doodh mein dhula hua Mukesh'. Soon the entire film industry began referring to him by this name. Did you know that Mukesh harboured a deep desire to become not a singer, but an actor ? That he eloped with his wife Saral in pucca filmi style ? Saral belonged to a wealthy, conservative and traditional Gujarati family. And that he was literally dragged out of a bar by music director Anil Biswas to sing 'dil jalta hai to jalne de', a track that became immortal in Indian film music history ? In 1959 'Anari' proved to be a major landmark in his career. Mukesh was nominated for the best singer award, which he won. Always described by Raj Kapoor as 'my soul'. Mukesh recorded his last song for Satyam Shivam Sundaram on July 26, 1976, just a day before he left for America to join Lata Mangeshkar's USA and Canada concert tour. Mukesh never returned to India. He passed away in Michigan in the United States of America on 27 August 1976. Though his son, Nitin Mukesh sounds like him, he has not been able to achieve what Mukesh did in his life-time.

Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna…

Kishore Kumar……A man of various facets.

It’s been sixteen years when on that  dreadful evening of Tuesday the 13^th October 1987 around 5.20 p.m. Kishore Kumar the vocal acrobat who had livened Hindi film music breath his last. He was an unconventional personality. A unique inimitable character, who was virtually a ‘one man industry’. From a singer to an actor, director, producer, music director, story writer, lyric writer, editor and distributor as well! All rolled into one. He was infact the only second person to handle so many departments of film making after the ‘Father of Indian Cinema’ Shri Dada Saheb Phalke. Born on 4, August 1929 in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh , Kishore Kumar’s only ambition in life was to become the greatest singer of India. Hence day in and day out he used to sing songs of his idol, the famous K.L. Saigal and dream of becoming the top singer.

After completing his education, Kishore Kumar ran to Bombay where his elder brother Ashok Kumar was then a superstar and wangled him an introduction  to K.L. Saigal, whom he idolized. However, destiny had something else in store for him. Hence he neither got  the chance to meet K.L. Saigal nor he got the break as a singer. Instead he was put in front of the camera. Left with no option he accepted the offer.

His first movie as an actor was Bombay talkies ‘Muqaddar’ in which he had a minor role. In the following year in 1953 he was cast as hero in “Andolan’ directed by Phani Majumdar. But his rare break came when he starred in A.V. M’s “Ladki” opposite big stars like Vyjantimala and Bharat Bhusha. In 1954 he established himself as a star with movies like ‘Adhikar’ ‘Lizam’ ‘Naukri’ becoming big hits.

In fact during the period of 55’and 56’ he was the most sought after actor, movies like ‘Delhi Ka Thug’, ‘New Delhi’, Shararar’, ‘Aasha’ Bhai-Bhai etc. celebrated jubilees. During this period he acted with almost all the leading actresses of that time from Meena Kumari (Shararat); Nimmi (Char Paise); Madhubala (Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi); Nutan (Delhi Ka Thug); Vyjantimala (New Delhi); Anita Guha (Chacha Zindabad); Shashikala (Krorepathi) etc…

It was during this period that he went into production also with ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’. The movie was a run away hit and remains as the best comedies in the annals of Indian cinema. After the success of this movie Kishore Kumar tried few more movies like ‘Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein’’, ‘Door Ka Rahi’ etc. but they failed miserably. Also on the other hand his acting career got a set back with movies like ‘Half-Ticket; ‘Mem Saheb’; ‘Dal Mein Kala; ‘Albela Mastana’; ‘Duniya Nachege’ ‘Shreeman Fantosh, etc. failing at the box office.

While his acting career was slowing fading his singing career seemed to be slowing beginning. And the credit for this goes to actor, Dev Anand who gave him a break in ‘Munimji’ to sing ‘Jeevan Ke Safar Mein Rahi’. The song became a run-away hit. Following this came ‘Nau Do Gyara’ in which Kishore Kumar sang all the songs for Dev Anand – Remember ‘Mana Janab Ne Pukara Nahi’ and ‘Chod Do Aanchal Zamana Kya Kahega… Soon Kishore Kumar become famous as an ideal singer for Dev Anand just as Mukesh was for Raj Kapoor and Mohd. Rafi for Dilip Kumar.

Though it’s true that Khemchand Prakash first gave the break to Kishore Kumar as a singer but it was music director S.D. Burman’s music in ‘Aaradhana’. Kishore Kumar won his first ‘Filmfare Award’ as best singer for the song ‘Meri Sapno Ki Rani’ and became a phenomena. Further movies like ‘Kati Patang’ , ‘Julie’, ‘Amar Prem’, ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, ‘Kora Kagaz’  established him as a singer par excellence. Actors who avoided him also took him as their play back singer. For instance even Dilip Kumar who insisted on having only Mohd. Rafi’s voice, took his voice in ‘Sagina’.

Kishore Kumar was gifted with a rich voice that could cover a fairly wide range. He could put into  each song that extra bit which made all the difference and accounted for the great liveliness that enabled him to win a maximum of seven Filmfare Awards for movie like ‘Aradhana’ (69); (80); ‘Namak Halal’ (82); ‘Sharabi’ (84); and ‘Sagar’ (85).

Towards his end Kishore Kumar had expressed his desire to quit films and settle down in his native Khandwa but instead he quit the world. With the sad demise of entertainer par excellence, Kishore Kumar, the Hindi film industry lost it’s limb. The hundreds of songs which he has immortalized by his melodious voice ensures that he stays in our ears and more importantly in our hearts.

To conclude remember Kishore Kumar’s last request;

Mere Heh Geet Yaad Rakhna

Kabhie  Alvida Na Kehna

Shabana Azmi was launched into films after a training in acting from the FTII. Her regular presence in new wave films like Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Genesis, Ek Din Achanak, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai, Sparsh, Arth and Godmother has made her the most prominent star spawned by the new Indian cinema. Her other face is that of a courageous political activist and a Rajya Sabha member.

Dilip Kumar and Madhubala 

Dilip Kumar and Madhubala's romantic liaison provides a backdrop for a tragic love story. Their romance began on the sets of 'Mughal-e-azam', but never got a chance to culminate into marriage. The actress' father, a conservative Pathan, opposed their love as he thought it would cut off all the privileges her family enjoyed from Madhubala's huge paycheck.

Dev Anand and Suraiya

This is another love story that ended as dramatically as it began. They met on the sets of 'Vidya' and sparks flew. In exemplary dare-devilry, Anand saved Suraiya from drowing. In a scene straight out of a flick, Suraiya thanked Anand saying, "If it was not for you, I would not have been alive today." To this, Anand replied, "Would I have lived after seeing you die?". Interestingly, Anand loved the sobriquet "India's Gregory Peck" because the Hollywood actor was Suraiya's favourite. On the sets of 'Jeet', Anand gifted his ladylove a diamond ring which was thrown into the Arabian sea by Suraiya's grandmother.

Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman

Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman's romance was low profile but, undoubtedly, legendery. Dutt was always smitten by Waheeda's glowing beauty and good looks. But songstress wife Geeta Dutt was the proverbial kabab mein haddi. So angry was Geeta Dutt with her hubby film maker that she refused to sing for Waheeda in 'Sahib Biwi aur Gulam'. The love story had a tragic end when Guru Dutt committed suicide.

Raj Kapoor and Nargis

Raj Kapoor was a popular hero and a happily married man when he fell in love with Nargis, who later married Sunil Dutt. They starred together in many RK films. They were the most sought after pair, cine-goers of the time loved to watch. The tension it caused in the Raj Kapoor family brought to an end another love story. Raj Kapoor was also linked to Vijayantimala. That is another love story.

Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha

This is among the most discussed about off-screen liaisons. Yash Chopra's 'Silsila' came too close to Amitabh Bachchan-Rekha-Jaya Bhaduri's own personal love triangle. Most of the time, the duo met regularly at a secluded bunglow, which belonged to Rekha's friend. Their affair was low key until Bachchan roughed up a guy who tried to misbehave with his ladylove on the sets of 'Ganga ki Saugandh'. Till today, Rekha hasn't confessed her love to Bachchan in public, neither has the superstar spoken about the fling.
